A NEW HALLELUJAH is a live album by Michael W. Smith, one of the
biggest stars of contemporary Christian music. Recorded in Houston in
July 2008, this set is as much a prayer service as it is a concert,
complete with worship interludes by Smith and Coalo Zamorano, a guest
vocal showcase for Israel Houghton and the 250-strong African
Children's Choir on the title track and "When I Think of You." There
are moments of spine-tingling beauty here.
Even if he never played a note of music, Michael W. Smith would be an
impressive figure. He's organized many ministries and youth
organizations, and even started his own Acts Church, which is named for
this Renaissance man's record label, Rocket Town. Did we happen to
mention that he's also one of the most successful Christian pop artists
ever? He started out in the early 1980s as a songwriter for the likes
of Amy Grant and Bill Gaither, but before long he launched a
high-profile solo career, snagging Grammy nominations left and right,
and selling countless records. As if that wasn't enough, the guy's also
a best-selling author. Smith apparently spends his life in search of
something he cannot do, but he hasn't found it yet.
